Author Biography

Akira Matsui (Japan) is a professional no? actor of the Kita school, based in Wakayama, central Japan. A first-generation performer, he began amateur lessons at age seven before becoming a live-in apprentice to Kita Roppeita XVth in Tokyo. Returning to Wakayama at age 30, he began offering lessons and created annual performance opportunities in Wakayama. His interest in Western musicals and dance led him to teach at American universities and theatre studios since 1976. He was awarded a doctorate from the University of London in 2016. Matsui’s career spanning has been uniquely international in the six-hundred-year history of the art. He has collaborated with ISTA since 2000 and is a permanent member of the Theatrum Mundi Ensemble.
